Love Note #3: November 2024 Newsletter
It has been an incredible year of highs and lows. But, we are still here.
My final Black Women Taught Us book event for the year was at the Free Black Women’s Library with the amazing Tamela J. Gordon (Hood Wellness) and moderated by the incomparable Drew Dixon. We had a beautiful, warm experience filled with deep care, Black Feminist curiosity, and a centering of healing, self-love, and affirmation.
I am so grateful to everyone who came out and attended. You all added to the richness and beauty of the space and conversation. Thank you to Mil Mundos Books for providing books for the event. And, to everyone who has purchased a book so far this year, everyone who came to a book talk or lecture, and all those who shared the book with friends, THANK YOU.

If you are still hoping to get a copy of Black Women Taught Us, please pick one up from a local indie bookstore or online at Bookshop.org. Always make an effort to support Black-owned, women-owned, and queer-owned booksellers. They are the lifeblood of our communities.
Rest and wellness to you all.
xoxo, Dr. J
Political Notes:
I have been taking time to relax and restore following the election. It’s been a season of grounding and thinking deeply about how we prepare ourselves for what is to come. I chatted with Sonali Kolhatkar at Yes! Magazine about how we move in this post-election moment. Watch the video below. You can also read my commentary about what we should be doing next here.
Book Notes:
The official book tour for Black Women Taught Us: An Intimate History of Black Feminism is over. But, that doesn’t mean there won’t be more opportunities to talk about the book or see me in-person. In fact, I’ll be at the first ever Zora Neale Hurston Summit at Barnard College in New York City on January 31st, 2025 to February 1, 2025.
I’m so elated to be a part of this important event to celebrate a Black Feminist scholar, dreamer, and icon who has had such a deep impact on my own life. I hope to see many of you in New York in January!
Writing Notes:
Do you have writing projects that you would like to finish? Are you looking for Black and queer people to add to your writing community?
In December, I will be co-hosting a virtual winter writing workshop via my media company Colored Convos Media, LLC.
All classes will be held on Saturdays at 11am EST via Zoom. Sign up for all three dates in December or just the sessions that work best for you.
Podcast Notes:
We’ve dropped a new episode of That Black Couple. In this episode, inspired by Aliah Sheffield's song "Earth is Ghetto," we dive into the chaotic reality of today's world, including the resurgence of COVID-19 and the unsettling political landscape post-election. We begin by candidly discuss their recent experiences with COVID-19 and the importance of remaining vigilant as the pandemic persists. In The Conversation, we delve into the implications of the recent election results, particularly the alarming Project 2025. In the Reflection, we offer practical advice for listeners to fortify themselves and their communities. We underscore the power of knowledge and community action in combating the systemic issues that threaten marginalized communities.
