Hi. I'm Jenn M. Jackson. I’m a Black androgynous genderflux lesbian, an abolitionist, and a lover of all Black people. I am disabled, polyamorous, and a mother of three free Black children.

I am an assistant professor of Political Science at Syracuse University with affiliations in Women’s and Gender studies, African American Studies, and LGBT Studies.

Thanks for being here.

This newsletter is an extension of my work as a political scientist, abolitionist, writer and educator. Everything I do centers the lives and livelihoods of Black Americans, especially those who are most vulnerable to carceral violence, discrimination, and harm.

My first book, Black Women Taught Us, explores the lives and experiences of Black Women icons like Harriet Jacobs, Ida B. Wells, Zora Neale Hurston, and Audre Lorde through what I call an “intimate history.” It's a deeply personal book that connects our daily experiences with race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability to broader themes in our Black Feminist history.

My second book, Policing Blackness, examines the ways young Black Amerixans navigate racial group threat in their daily lives and how those choices are inflected by gender, sexuality, and class.

I'm a regular on Bloomberg News and a columnist at Yes! Magazine. This newsletter bridges all of these hats. Welcome!

What should you expect here?

I'm a neurodivergent Virgo so expect me to be honest. I don't do fluff and I don't sugarcoat anything. I'll be blunt and to the point.
